This stretch of Dorset’s coast is a designated world heritage site with breathtaking inland and coastal walks and many coves and beaches to explore. Just 2/3 miles away is the seaside town of Weymouth with its sandy beach and safe bathing, bustling restaurants, shops and nightlife. Its picturesque harbour is used by local fishermen bringing in their catch as well as yachts and motor boats. Further North lies the delightful county town of Dorchester, former home of the novelist Thomas Hardy, with its renowned market and Prince Charles’s Poundbury estate.
The Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Lorton Valley borders the grounds of the house, with many acres of footpaths through nature reserves and beyond this, the Lodmoor RSPB reserve. From the house, a footpath/cycle route borders these areas, leading directly to the sea.
Portland Sailing Academy hosted the 2012 Olympic sailing events and now offers sailing tuition at all levels. Portland harbour has become a popular destination for most forms of water sports. Just a mile or so away is a sports centre and golf, riding, cycle hire, is also available nearby.
Whether you like fossil hunting on the Jurassic Coast, tracing Roman history, country pubs, cream teas, gardens and historic houses, or just to ‘get away from it all’, this area of Dorset can hardly fail to please!
